Obituary for Anna Flavia Fernandes Prabhu (Dias)

Anna Flavia (Dias) Fernandes Prabhu, wearer of high heels, luckiest bingo player, and lover of bare winter trees, died on December 12th, 2019.

In her 71 years of life, Flavia lived in three countries and traveled with her husband to dozens more. She was born in Mangalore, India, where she was raised and educated amongst seven siblings and a multitude of nieces and nephews, to whom she was affectionately known as Aunty Baddu.

In 1974, she migrated to the United Arab Emirates where she was always surrounded by a large group of friends whom her children would later only know as family.

In 1979, she married her main squeeze, the late Titus Fernandes Prabhu, with whom she had three beautiful daughters: Armaity Fernandes Prabhu of Chelmsford MA, Amrith Fernandes Prabhu of Lowell MA, and Astrid Underwood of Pepperell MA. Together they raised these daughters who are multi-dimensional, relentless advocates, and effortlessly resilient.

As a family, they took residence in the United States in 1994 after which she could be heard for hours laughing on the phone connected to loved ones in all parts of the globe - inevitably ending up in a loud discussion about the phone bill with Titus. We all know who won that discussion.

Of Indian descent from the Mangalorean Catholic community, Flavia was well known for her infectious laughter, vibrant disposition, and her knack for cooking. She especially loved to share recipes and cooking techniques with her son-in-law, Christopher Underwood (formerly of Hudson, MA). As a point of pride and affection for him, she boasted about his love for Indian recipes and shared this with everyone she spoke to. She was lovingly called Nani by her grandchildren Dante (6), Brynli (3), and infant Easton, in whom she took immense joy.

Flavia experienced many comprehensive and delicate health issues that sometimes competed with her outgoing personality. Nevertheless, she persisted. She will be sorely missed.

The family would like to thank the staff members at Wingate Andover, who were instrumental in her care over the last five years and the kind people at Lawrence General Hospital. The family is especially grateful to the High Pointe Hospice House where Flavia spent her last days.

Please join the family in celebrating her life on Friday, December 20th at the Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Boulevard, Lowell, MA, from 4 to 6 p.m. Flavia’s Catholic Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, December 21st at St. Mary Church, 25 North Road, Chelmsford, MA, at 11 a.m. (kindly meet at church), followed by a committal ceremony at Edgewood Cemetery, 107 Amherst Street, Nashua, NH. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in her memory to The Edinburgh Center (, which supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and where Flavia’s eldest daughter, Armaity, resides. (On the note section of your cheque, please specify “Jessie Road”).
