Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend
Barbara J. (Simmons) Bernstein, of Lowell, entered into rest on December 21, 2020, in Haverhill, aged 82 years. She was the beloved wife of Albert Bernstein, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage.
Born in Boston, July 7, 1938, a daughter of the late Edmund and Sadye (Richmond) Simmons, Barbara graduated from Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Dorchester, and Boston State Teachers College.
During her career, Barbara held positions as an English teacher, dentist's assistant, and most proudly, owner of the former Factory Shoe Outlet in Lowell where she and Albert worked side by side for 45 years. Over the last 20 years, she spent time editing and performing research for the Business Reference Guide.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, Andover, and the former Temple Beth El, Lowell. Always active in the Jewish community, Barbara was a past president of the Sisterhood, assisted in the temple office, and held membership in the publicity committee and Hadassah.
Barbara was proud to have helped launch and nurture Lowell’s highly successful Reading is Fundamental program. An avid baker, she enjoyed holding cooking demonstrations at the Lowell Folk Festival. She was also a chocolate and ice cream lover. Most of all, she loved spending time with family, especially attending their many music concert performances.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Sharon Garde, her husband Cesar, and their son Alex of Boxboro, and Marcie, her husband Harold, and their daughter Lily, and a sister, Tobi Simmons of Boston.
A private graveside service was held at Temple Beth El Cemetery in Chelmsford. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in her name to either Hadassah at www.hadassah.org, or to a cancer charity of one’s choice.
