I met Effie Klinger 17 years ago, she would sit out on her back porch, it was nice to have a set of eyes watching the neighborhood. She had regular visitors, I would wave and she'd wave back. Over time I met her siblings and would go over and chat, mostly about Lowell, after they left. Then Billy moved to Fla , Norma passed away. Our chats turned towards family, she told me her story, I told her mine. I noticed her slowing and started doing little things, help close the barn doors, or bring the groceries from the car to the back door. She wanted to pay me, no way, I'm trying to get to Heaven, I'd tell her. She kept slowing, we talked more about Jesus, her family that passed. Chores increased, change a battery, check the mail, change the clocks, open a can, snowblow in the winter. "I should pay you!" No way, I'm trying to get to Heaven! Well, today Aunt Effie paid me, and she made sure I couldn't say No! I had so many people, ask me if I was her neighbor, at the cemetery, the after meal, and they met my beloved Whitney, the mask and meal maker. They all knew us, through Doris, Aunt Effie. She paid me, and I'm left with a debt of gratitude. Rest in Peace, Aunt Effie! Our hearts hurt tonight, but knowing you're with all the loved ones we chatted about, eases the hurt. No more earthly ills, the window is dark tonight, the cage is empty, but the memory cup is full. Enjoy Heaven, Aunt Effie, you earned it. Someday we'll be neighbors, again!
