Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother
George T. “Choppy” Baldwin, age 87, died December 14, 2021, at Lowell General Hospital after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Jacqueline M. (Hurley), with whom he was married for 65 years.
A son of the late Thomas L. and Alice (Tilton) Baldwin, he was born in Lowell on October 16, 1934. He received his education in the local schools.
From a very early age, Choppy was always tinkering with cars and soon that passion led to his long and successful business of repairing and building all types of vehicles, and a racing career.
Choppy was the driver of the famous “Double L” that ran many area tracks in MA and NH. Everyone always wanted to know what the LL stood for - it was the favorite beer of the time, Ballantine Light Lager.
In 1978, he opened two Choppy’s Auto Repair shops in Lowell. As his business grew, he built the current location on Lincoln Street. He developed a large, loyal clientele over the years, earning a well-known reputation for quality work at a fair price.
He is survived by three children: John T. Baldwin Sr., April D. Farley and her husband Robert J., and George K. Baldwin and his wife Chastity M. (O’Day). Four grandchildren: Jennifer Bowman and her husband J. Brandon, Jessica Gillis, John T. Baldwin Jr., and Mikayla D. Farley and her fiancé Michael Trzcienski, and Jason P. Baldwin. Six great-grandchildren: Hunter Bowman, Sophia Bowman, Mayra Gillis, Jacob Gillis, Natalia Baldwin and Bella Baldwin. Two brothers-in-law, Thomas Hurley, and Edward “Rocky” Hurley. He also leaves his beloved dog, Gretchen.
Choppy was predeceased by all twelve of his siblings; Alice Pearl McDowell, Ethel Reil, Thomas Lester Baldwin, Shirley Cloutier, Ellsworth “Beefy” Baldwin, Donald Baldwin, Richard Baldwin, Everett “Whitey” Baldwin, Barbara Joyce Stuart, Ronald “Babe” Baldwin, Dorothy Brumley, and Brenda Lee Savoie.
