U.S. Air Force Vietnam War Veteran
John F. Burke, 82, a longtime resident of Tyngsborough, died peacefully November 19, 2021 at Lowell General Hospital, with his loving sister by his side.
Born in Lowell on January 4, 1939, he was the son of the late Margaret M. (Lannon) Burke. He grew up in the Acre neighborhood, and received his education through the Lowell school system.
John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on September 11, 1956, and ultimately served two combat tours in Vietnam during his 20-year military career. Sgt. Burke was awarded the Air Force Longevity Service Award with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a skilled carpenter at Hanscom Air Force Base for many years.
He was past Commander of the Tyngsborough American Legion, a longtime member of the Tyngsborough Sportsmen's Club, and belonged to many other organizations over the years. John was also an avid competitive target shooter.
He is survived by a sister, Barbara Ambrosino and her husband Robert, and a niece, Lisa McDonald, all of Tyngsborough, a nephew, Michael Ambrosino and his wife Carol, and a great-nephew, Chris Ambrosino, all of Hudson, NH.
Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Boulevard, Lowell, on Sunday, November 28, from 2 to 5 PM. His Committal Service, with Military Honors, will be held on Thursday, December 2, in the Chapel at St. Patrick Cemetery, 1251 Gorham St., Lowell, at 11 AM. (Kindly meet at the Chapel.)
