Obituary for Mary Jean Roth (Kozak)

Loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Friend

Mary Jean (Kozak) Roth, of Lowell, formerly of Dracut, died on May 22, 2021 at Lowell General Hospital after a lengthy illness, aged 79 years. She was the beloved wife of the late John D. Roth USMCR, with whom she had celebrated over 30 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2010.

A daughter of the late Valentine "Alec" and Jennie (Dys) Kozak, she was born August 12, 1941 on Primrose Hill in Dracut. While growing up in a house with no electricity, hand-pumped water, and a wood stove for heat and cooking, she attended Dracut schools and graduated from Dracut High School with the Class of 1959.

Over the years, Mary Jean was a well-known, beloved waitress at local establishments such as Howard Johnson's, the Lo Kai, the Ground Round, and the Owl Diner.

She was fanatical about Elvis, loved country and western music, and often watched classic black and white films and game shows. Mary Jean liked to play Scat, and some say her winning strategy was absolutely diabolical. She also enjoyed Keno and word search, and loved to try her luck on scratch tickets, always hoping for the ‘big win’.

Traditional Polish foods being among her favorite, she happily gathered family members together for epic pierogi-making parties. Roger's homemade stuffed peppers were also a favorite, and she was sure to remind him to make some for her whenever he came to visit. Most of all, Mary Jean will always be remembered for her strong faith, love of family, and having somewhat of an addiction to taffy.

Mary Jean is survived by two sons, Bryant Allard and his wife Sandra of Dracut, and Roger E. Allard and his wife Cynthia of Gorham, ME; three sisters, Victoria Lacourse and her husband Herve of Nashua, NH, Alice Veiga and her husband Martin of Lowell, and Cheryl Long and her husband Dennis of Center Ossipee, NH; two brothers, Valentine Kozak of Atkinson, NH, and Peter Kozak and his wife Laurie of Amherst, NH; one grandson, Bryant "Joey" Allard Jr. of Lowell who, for the last ten years, was her devoted caretaker. She also leaves her longtime dear friend, Mary Garabedian of Lowell, and a trusted companion, her dog Champ. She was the sister-in-law of the late Joyce Kozak.

Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Boulevard, Lowell, on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Her Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 144 East Merrimack Street, Lowell, at 10:00 a.m. (Please meet at Church) Per current state and CDC guidance, face coverings are required and social distancing will be in place. Interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, 155 Boston Road, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make memorial donations in her name to the Lowell Humane Society, Funeral Director, Frederick W. Healy. Please visit Mary Jean's life tribute page at
