Loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather
Norman Joseph Plourde, aged 97, passed away peacefully at his home in Dracut, MA on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, surrounded by family. The loss of his beloved wife Claire (Ouellette) Plourde, 98, on September 4, 2018, ended a love story spanning over 75 years here on earth that, undoubtedly, has resumed once again in Heaven.
Born in Lowell, MA on June 26, 1923, he was the son of the late Alfred J. and Laura M. (Patenaude) Plourde. During his childhood, Norman resided in the Centralville neighborhood of Lowell, and later moved to Dracut. He was a graduate of St. Louis School in Lowell.
He was a communicant of Ste. Therese Church in Dracut for many years, before attending Ste. Marie’s Church in South Lowell, where his dear friend, Fr. Don Lozier, OMI is in residence.
On July 4th, 1942, Norman and Claire met on a blind date. They married at St. Louis de France Church on May 26, 1945. In 1950, Norman and Claire built a home in Dracut where they raised their family and lived out their remaining years.
Norman began his career at Lowell Ford as a Service Manager, and then worked at Arlington Ford for over 8 years. He drove semi-trucks for J.P. Stevens Company for 12 years, and later, worked at Form Fit Plastic in Dracut as a Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor for 10 years. A consummate gentleman, Norman was sought after by funeral homes throughout the Lowell and southern New Hampshire area to work in service to grieving families. In his spare time, he enjoyed repairing vehicles for family and friends.
Norman was a lifelong member of UCT (United Commercial Travelers) and the Dracut Senior Center. He also volunteered for the Dracut Rotary and Dracut Lions Club where he enjoyed building large floats for the Dracut Memorial Day Parade over the years.
He enjoyed dining out with family, and also making his famous crêpes for them at home. Norman especially looked forward to Saturday afternoon dinners, a long-standing family tradition, where baked beans, brown bread, relish and hot dogs were always served.
Norman liked to play his harmonica, especially with his great-great grandson Michael, listen to music, and hunt for ‘another man’s treasures’ at area Flea Markets. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children, granddaughter and great-grandchildren, telling them stories and adventures from his long, wonderful life.
He is survived by two children: David N. Plourde and his wife Priscilla A. (Boissonneault) of Dracut, and Suzanne G. Connors and her life-long partner Charles “Chuck” Monoxelos of Litchfield, NH; a cherished granddaughter, Kristina B. Virella of Pelham, NH, and her former husband, Towee Virella of Lowell, three precious great-grandchildren; Anthony M. Virella of Lowell, Erika S. Virella and Aidan L. Virella, both of Pelham, NH, and one adored great-great-grandson, Michael J. Virella of Lowell. A brother-in-law, Roland J. Ouellette, age 97, of Nashua, NH; several nieces and nephews, his former daughter-in-law, Suzan (Thivierge) Costa of Lowell; and a dear family friend, Thomas Lippe of Lowell. He was the brother of the late Therese Sawyer, Gloria Hamel, Robert Plourde, Maurice “Moe” Plourde, Charles Plourde, and Roger Plourde, and brother-in-law of the late Estelle Ducharme and Rita Netto.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Summit ElderCare in Lowell for the loving care they provided, and Norman’s many friends for their acts of kindness.
