Loving Mother, Grandmother

Phyllis Florence (Loftus) Yaffa, a lifelong resident of Lowell, entered in to rest on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, in Lowell, aged 80 years. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Yaffa.

Born in Dracut, Massachusetts on November 19, 1940, she was the daughter of Aleck and Sadie Loftus, owners of the former Ambassador Cleaners on Aiken Street in Lowell. Phyllis graduated from Lowell High School and earned her Associate Degree from Middlesex Community College.

Phyllis was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, Andover, formerly Temple Beth El, of Lowell.

She met Walter at a bowling alley in Boston, MA. Irked by what she considered to be a cocky attitude, she tossed a bowling ball in his direction. This of course, made him even more determined to get to know her. Walter won her heart, and they married on November 15, 1964. At the time of Walter’s passing in 2005, they had celebrated over 40 years marriage and raised four children.

She held various jobs within the city of Lowell, including switchboard operator at the former Sheraton Hotel, secretary at the former Merrimack Valley Hebrew Academy, and medical records clerk at the Lowell Community Health Center.

Phyllis loved to talk on the phone, and also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and reading. Most of all, she loved to have family and friends around her.

She is survived by a daughter, Caroline Yaffa, and three sons, Henry Yaffa, and Eliot Yaffa, all of Lowell, and Gerald Yaffa and his wife Christine of Castle Rock, CO, and two cherished granddaughters, Eden Yaffa and Shoshana Yaffa, both of Lowell. She is also survived by a brother, Jordan Loftus and his wife Bernice of Houston, TX, and three sisters, Irene and the late Bill Smith of Naples, FL, Lydia and Irwin Hammer of Nashua, NH, and Roberta and Israel Sachs of Woodbridge, VA. Also, a sister-in-law, Georgette Loftus of Mays Landing, NJ. She was the sister of the late Louie, Melvin, and David Loftus, and unnamed baby twins who died at birth.

A private graveside service was held at Temple Beth El Cemetery in Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in her name to Congregation Beth Israel, 6 Dundee Park, Andover, MA 01810, or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements in the care of the MORSE-BAYLISS Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Blvd., Lowell. Funeral Director, Frederick W. Healy.
