Obituary for Vincent P. "Vinny" Freeman

Loving Husband, Father, Vietnam War Veteran

Vincent P. ”Vinny” Freeman, Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force, Retired, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, died peacefully on June 8, 2021, at Lowell General Hospital-Saints Campus, his loving family at his side, aged 82 years. He was the beloved husband of Jeannette P. Carreiro.

Vinny was born in Lowell on February 25, 1939, a son of the late Edward and Rita (Hammersley) Freeman. He received his education in the Lowell school system.

On January 31, 1958, at the age of 18, Vincent enlisted in the U. S. Navy, and served at the U. S. Naval Receiving Station in San Francisco, California, until his honorable discharge on January 18, 1962. When once again Vinny felt the call to duty, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force on January 16, 1968, and served as a Flight Engineer during the Vietnam War. A highly decorated soldier, Vinny was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses, thirteen Air Medals, the Purple Heart, a Meritorious Service Medal, an Outstanding Unit Award with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device, along with several others. He retired from the Air Force on June 7, 1987, having served his country with honor and courage.

Vinny continued to serve his fellow veterans at home as a member of the Merrimack Valley Vietnam Veterans, Disabled American Veterans Billerica Post 47, American Legion Post 366, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was extremely proud to have been a longtime member, Honor Guard, and Past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Walker Rogers Post 662 in Lowell. He participated in many veterans events across the Merrimack Valley. Most notably, he felt deeply privileged to perform the sacred duty of funeral military honors at the services of fallen veterans for more than 30 years.

He was a longtime member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Chelmsford.

Vinny was the most caring, loving and giving husband and friend. Never was a man loved by so many people. He will always hold a very special place in our hearts.

Besides his wife Jeannette, he is survived by two stepchildren, Lisa Dunbrack and her husband Verne, and Steven Tompson, and dear friends, Joan Lawlor, Katie and David Keefe, and Mary Anne Warran. He was also the dear friend of the late John Warran.
